WPT Enterprises, Inc., is the creator of the World Poker Tour® (WPT®) – the premier name in internationally televised gaming and entertainment with brand presence in land-based tournaments, television, online and mobile. Leading innovation in the sport of poker since 2002, WPT ignited the global poker boom with the creation of a unique television show based on a series of high-stakes poker. The 2020 World Poker Tour Gardens Poker Championship is one of three WPT delayed final tables that are now set to play down to a winner more than a year after the final six players were initially decided. The WPT was scheduled to play out that event, along with the WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open and the WPT L.A.
The COVID-19 pandemic put a stop to land-based poker play last year. For the World Poker Tour, many final tables for big events were delayed for weeks which led to months. Now, almost a year later, these events are set to play out. The first one starts on March 10, with the return of the WPT Gardens Poker Championship.
Back in Action
Players are ready to be back at the felt once again in the WPT events. The Gardens Poker Championship will be a standalone event according to PokerNews, and there will be three more final tables taking place this year.
The Borgata Winter Poker Open will finish up on May 16 and then the WPT L.A. Poker Classic will conclude. The WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown is scheduled for May 18. This last event was just announced by the casino. It had a $3,500 buy-in and offers a $2 million prize pool guarantee.
All the final tables will take place at the PokerGO Studio located outside of the ARIA. In the past, they were supposed to take place at the HyperX Esports Arena. Because the events are taking place while the pandemic is still an issue, we expect that players will be asked to wear masks and social distancing protocols will be in place.
Casinos across the United States continue to provide safety and health protocols so that players and employees remain free of the virus. It is not expected that such protocols will end any time soon as the virus threat is ongoing. Changes will be made of course as the months go by and new protocols are put in place based on venue.
PokerNews was told by the WPT that for the March 10 event, all players competing will need to take a COVID-19 test. Any player who tests positive will be paid based on chip stack. This has been agreed upon by the players involved as well as local regulators.
Upcoming Online Events
The WPT is not only focused on finishing up the land-based events, but also on online poker play. From March 7 to the 16, players can take part in the WPT500 Online via partypoker. The buy-in to the event is $530 and a total prize of $1 million is up for grabs.
This is the Main Event of the series. The entire series will run through March 23, offering plenty of events for players to take advantage of. Also, on the schedule is the WPT500 Knockout Online Main Event. This tournament also has a $530 buy-in and a $1 million prize pool.
The WPT moved online last year for events after the virus showed it was not going anywhere. Of course, players only have access to online WPT events in states where online poker is legalized. The access to online gaming has been a blessing for states like New Jersey as land-based casinos closed, but online sites were open 24/7.

For poker players, the online services and big events such as those hosted by WPT are a way to keep playing the game, even if it is not offered in land-based form.

“We want to make sure that not only is our partner casino ready, but that our player safety and the safety of our employees are of the utmost importance,” he said WPT Matt Savage, Executive Tour Director, when asked about the difficulty of this late final table situation in an interview with Card Player last year. “We are ready to go … as soon as things open up and hopefully the players have no travel restrictions at that point. We also need to be very aware of this to ensure that we can get everyone to these final tables and do so in a safe manner. As I said, we are ready to go as soon as things change and I believe the players are too. All players who reached the final tables in question were paid sixth place money. I hope these players are fine and that we can get cards in the air again as soon as it is safe to do so. “

The change in the venue for these Final Tables may be the result of a change in ownership of the WPT which took place in January. The tour was sold to Element Partners by Allied Esports, which owns the HyperX Esports Arena. GMBH for a reported $ 78,250,000.
